A Brief History Of Love: Josh's Letter To The Readers
                                     by Josh Righter

Dear Readers,

I am literally crying right now, so forlorn am I at the prospect of ending this big piece of myself, this thing that has grown more than I ever imagined it would, and touched the lives of so many sweet, sweet children.

Just kidding.

Most of you probably knew that, and in over six years, it has gone unsaid more times than I have counted (well over 1,000 at this point). But now it's finally time to say it. Just kidding.

I won't lie: one of my greatest joys in doing The Enduring Vision was to gain precisely that reaction: the one from the typical not-quite-all-witted Internet user who was angry and confused by what he read here. Of course, that wasn't the primary purpose of the site, nor was it ever. The main idea here was to skewer those aspects of society that we felt needed skewering. It was to say "fuck you" to things that quite obviously needed fucking, and not in the sexy way, either. We certainly did not always succeed, and even when we did, the results were not always funny. But I proudly stand by those three stories that are.

I just got an email now, while I was writing this, that gave me pause. Here is what it said:

http://www.enduringvision.com/archives/local_child_discovers.htm Is so fucking funny. - Rebecca

This makes me happy. This is how I can consider The EV a success. It is the last letter we will receive as a regularly (cough) updating site, and it's a simple comment on how something we wrote made someone laugh. Call me a hippie, but I like that. That one comment is worth more than the sum total of everything I've done at my day job, which involves, oh, let's just say inanimate carbon rods.

But now, finally, we come to the end. Please don't blame the world for this, because it didn't suddenly get better. In fact, it's just as hilariously silly as ever. No, this ending is all my fault. I simply don't think I can continue to give the site the attention and devotion required to keep it sustained at a level that's at least above Andy Borowitz's warmed-over efforts. Just kidding. I could do that with my eyes closed. But still, you see the point I'm trying to make here.

Is it really an "ending", though? What will happen next week if you type in the old faithful URL? You'll still see the site. You'll still see it for a good while, I'd imagine; just because I'm quitting the internet news satire business for now, it doesn't mean I'm done with posting things on the internet for good. I hear they're doing interesting things with video these days.

If you haven't yet added our RSS feed to your reader or browser, I would highly encourage you to do that now. When we eventually do begin a new project, I'll be sure to add it to the feed and you'll be notified. You are also welcome to email me any time you'd like. Emails sustain my life force.

It is an unbelievably cliche thing to do to thank your readers/supporters/etc. at a time like this, so I will leave it to this: you guys are all deserving of some kind of award of awesomeness. True EV fans are a great bunch. Some of you have even recognized me out and about, and every single person who did was wonderful to talk and converse with. I can assure you that the site would have ended long ago if not for your support. Jokes are less funny if you're telling them to yourself.

Continuing right on with the cliches, those who have written for the site over the years were also an integral part of the site's continued existence. There were many of you, but in particular, Alex, Scott W., Anna, Mike, Jake, and of course, my right-hand man Scott B. I would be completely remiss if I didn't give a special thanks to Dan Young, the EV prodigal son who never came back home.

I really am tearing up a bit now as I approach the end. I know this is it for the old girl, and -- let's face it -- probably for me and creating things on the internet as well.

Just kidding.

With Love,
Josh Righter
